How to choose the tiles for the bathroom

For a bathroom, the choice of tiles is fundamental, both from an aesthetic point of view and from that of functionality. Today the bathroom is to all intents and purposes a room that contributes to the design of the house and the choice of porcelain stoneware floors and walls contributes decisively to the result.

Especially for coverings, the bathroom is the main room where you can carefully select the tiles. Our advice is to rely on professionals to be able to decide together all the details such as the size of the bathroom, the materials, the budget.
One of the first things to consider when choosing bathroom coverings is the size of the tiles: large, small or mosaic.
The areas of the bathroom on which to choose the different types of tiles are normally: the covering of the walls, the flooring and the covering of the shower space. A new trend is the identification of the sanitary area: tiles with particular effects, such as cementine tiles and mosaics, can give a touch of design to an often denigrated area of the bathroom.

The current fashion in interior design tends to favor stoneware with neutral effects, sober palettes and timeless designs of whites, ice grays and woods, but the latest trends also allow for whimsical patterns: printed and decorated tiles are a weapon in more to add flair to the bathroom.

You can also create a more complex bathroom pattern with three different types of tiles: one for the floor, one for the walls and one for the details. The ideal is to keep a single color palette to avoid a disharmonious and heavy effect.

Bathroom coverings: how to choose the effects

Thanks to the versatility of porcelain stoneware, different effects can be used in the bathroom for floors and walls.
The porcelain stoneware effects most commonly used in bathrooms are the stone effect, the cement effect, the marble effect, the wood effect and the fabric effect.
  • The stone effect stoneware and cement effect guarantee materiality and elegance, especially with large slabs, but can be heavy if used homogeneously for both floors and walls, giving a monolithic effect. Our advice is to combine them with geometric games and / or particular colors or mosaics: in this way you can break up the environment and make it more dynamic and light.
  • The marble effect stoneware is back in fashion in recent years and the new technologies that guarantee hyper realistic textures have increased the use of this effect. The use of this effect creates a luxurious and rich style, especially with large-format slabs and classic-inspired glossy effects. it is normally not recommended for use in small bathrooms, in contrast with a "luxury" allure.
  • The wood effect stoneware is perfect for the contemporary bathroom, where the trend is to create a refined and welcoming environment, reminiscent of a spa. To obtain the best results, we recommend using the wood effect as a covering carefully, to avoid weighing down the overall effect: the ideal is to use wood-effect stoneware only in the shower or on a single wall, in combination with materials. different, to highlight the different areas of the bathroom.
  • The fabric effect stoneware is a very particular new trend and stoneware tiles combine with the textures of madras, tartan, linen and cotton to obtain effects that belong to the world of fashion with harmony and refinement. Relying on professionals in the choice of this type of effect is always advisable, especially to avoid exaggerating and falling into a very little design upholstery effect.

Choose the height of the tiles in the bathroom

The choice of bathroom tiles is not just about the floors. These rooms of the house are particularly subject to humidity, thermal changes and splashes of water, which is why it is a well-established habit to also cover one or more walls. The choice of the height of the coverings is dictated by both reasons of use and style.

bathroom coverings over 2 meters
Cladding the bathroom walls up to 2-2.20 meters, that is up to the upper edge of the door frame, is the most common choice, because it ensures adequate protection from mold and humidity. This solution allows you to be able to choose the tile design. It is also the most recommended solution if the shower box is near the door. This will give continuity to the coating, creating a uniform aesthetic effect throughout the room.

coatings up to 1.20 - 1.50 meters
The half-height coating, i.e. up to 120/150 cm, is ideal for long and narrow bathrooms. Keeping a free band between the cladding and the ceiling allows you to give more brightness to the environment. for this solution, aesthetically more flexible, some critical points must be considered: the sanitary control plate and the shower: in these cases it is also necessary to consider a difference in height, maintaining design and movement in the cladding.

ceiling cladding
Bringing the tiling up to the ceiling is a "vintage" fashion, in fashion in the 60s / 70s. Suitable for very large and bright bathrooms, it brings with it the preference for large format tiles, which allows you to eliminate the joints and cover an entire portion (or wall) with a single slab.
Critical points of this solution are the irregularities of the ceiling and the attention that must be paid to finding the right installation combination that does not force irregular cuts of the tiles at the corner with the ceiling.

no lining
The total absence of the tile covering is a risky and uncommon choice, especially due to the effects of hygiene and maintenance: molds and halos can appear much more easily and it is therefore necessary to use different solutions, such as resin, which however allow less aesthetic flexibility.
